The Bamenda Coordinating Center for Studies in Disability and Rehabilitation

Learning and Education

The BCCSDR carries out a variety of learning and educational activities   related to disability and rehabilitation in the North West Region.

We hold and participate in training, conferences and workshops on specific rehabilitation topics. In addition we hold our annual Bamenda Conference on Disability and Rehabilitation every December in Bamenda.

We provide education and support to disability organizations, persons with disabilities and their families.

We provide professional and student placements and provide assistance ( materially, logistically and educationally) to students, volunteers, researchers and others who want to support the centre.

Our centre also has a resource library on disability and rehabilitation issues for members and the general public, including rehabilitation and materials and equipment. Only members can check books out from the library.

INTEGRATED KIDS CAMP
This is an initiative of the center to make the region inclusive from the kids to the old. Proposed by an international volunteer to the center, the program started in August 2009. The idea was to empower girl children who are disabled since they had a double vulnerability. But after a serious survey, it was necessary to include male children in the program.
The target group of the program was kids with disabilities as they are to be empowered. They can not be completed empowered if they are not given the opportunities to social and interact with temporarily able children. Kids of ages 6- 14, of both sexes and with and without disabilities of all types were accepted to the program that come up in sessions.
These children are taught, assisted and guided by special needs teachers, international volunteers whom mostly are occupational therapist and their parents. Their parents are involved in the program so that they should know how to followup with their educational progress at home. These kids are drilled on basic Mathematics, Basic English, drawing and coloring, story telling, reading of children books, sign language, group discussions, sporting activities etc.
After attending two sessions some of the kids with disabilities who do not go to school or were dropped out are either sent to school or to vocational centers to learn a trade according to their abilities. This is the highest value of the program as it adds meaning to the lives of these kids.
So far 3 sessions have been held and the center is looking into the 4th session. Members of the center are very impressed with the program as they pledge their support to it.
